The New York Association for American-Russian Relations
William J. D’Eletto, President.
A part of the NY Association as an officer for approximately 35 years. When
elected president
In 1988 he worked to bring the Association into the United Nations as a Non -
Governmental Organization (NGO) associated with the UN Department of Public
Information. At that time the Associations target projects at the UN were
education, environment and cultural activities. In addition, provide
medical assistance to many of the former USSR republics during their time of
need. He negotiated hundreds of professional goodwill missions between
Russia and former USSR republics and the United States. Worked
within the school system by bringing diplomats
from many countries into schools to
meet and
be interviewed by students. He was the guest of the First Women in Space,
Valentina
Tereshkova in Moscow.
He was
the official host for Niana Yeltsin wife of Boris Yeltsin, during their visit to
New York City. Met with Alexander Lukashenko,
President of Belarus, Leonid Kuchma, former Ukrainian
President,
and Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian
Federation. In 1991, Mr. D’Eletto was given an award by the Ukrainian Embassy
for his efforts associated with medical assistance for the victims of the
Chernobyl disaster.
Over the years
New York Association also hosted the Bolshoi Ballet, Kirov Ballet, Georgian
Dancers, Ukrainian National Dance Company,
Tajik Dance
Group and many other professional entertainers and high profile governmental
officials. In 1998, a new division was adopted, the NY Association for
International Relations. Since then the organization expanded its activities
with over 20 countries
